Rug Care Instructions

A Moroccan rug can last a lifetime — it’s an heirloom you’ll cherish for years to come.
With a little care, your rug will stay beautiful, soft, and vibrant for decades.

Did You Know?

Each of our colourful Moroccan cotton rugs — also known as Boucherouite rugs — is handmade by a collective of women artisans in Morocco. They transform leftover fabric scraps from clothing factories into one-of-a-kind works of art.
An inspiring way to recycle fast-fashion textiles and keep traditional craft alive. ♻️

Cotton Rug Care

(Boucherouite Rugs – Machine Washable!)

Everyday Care

  • Machine wash cold, delicate cycle

  • Avoid leaving it wet inside the washer

  • Tumble dry low or hang to dry

  • Trim any loose threads — it won’t damage the rug

💡 If your washing machine isn’t large enough, try a local laundromat with industrial machines.

Professional Cleaning
Prefer to have it cleaned for you? A professional wash should cost around $2 per square foot.
Search for a local Oriental Rug Cleaner — they’re familiar with handmade textiles.
If you’re in Montreal or Vancouver, feel free to email us for recommendations.

Stain Removal

  • Spray stains with SHOUT or use blue Dawn dish soap (it works wonders!)

  • Gently blot with water and a white towel

  • Let it air dry

Pro Tip:
Don’t wait until your rug looks dull or dirty — a quick wash as soon as it needs it keeps colors bright and textures soft.

💛 Each Boucherouite rug is one of a kind — if you’ve fallen in love with one, don’t wait too long!

Wool Rug Care

(Beni Ourain, Azilal, Boujad, and other wool styles)

Regular Care

  • Vacuum regularly to remove dust and debris

  • Refresh your rug with a light brush (a small metal BBQ brush or soft plastic brush works great)

  • Don’t worry about shedding — any loose fibers will come out naturally when vacuumed or brushed

Stain Removal

  • Spot clean with blue Dawn dish soap and water

  • Gently blot with a white towel, let dry completely, then brush to restore the pile

Deep Cleaning

  • Professional cleaning once a year is ideal — about $2–$3 per square foot

  • Look for a local Oriental Rug Cleaner who specializes in handmade wool rugs

  • In Montreal or Vancouver, email us for trusted local options

DIY Method
If you prefer to clean it yourself:

  1. Lay a plastic tarp outdoors.

  2. Hose down the back of the rug first, then the front.

  3. Use cold water + a gentle laundry soap.

  4. Rinse thoroughly and dry in the sun.

  5. Once fully dry, brush the rug to fluff the wool.

Pro Tip:
Don’t wait for dirt to build up — regular care keeps your rug vibrant and prevents deep stains from setting in.

Storing Your Rug

  • Make sure your rug is completely dry before storing

  • Avoid sealed plastic bags — wool needs to breathe

  • Roll loosely and store in a cool, dry place
