We’ve gathered up some of our favourite tips and tricks on how to style pillows on your couch or sofa.
In our house, the couch is the main act. Probably because it is featured in our largest, brightest room...but also probably because it is a beast of a sofa. It is the resting spot for my husband and I at the end of a long day, but it is home for several hours a day to our two dogs as well. We love that thing! Although it is extremely comfy and looks beautiful, it is nothing without some throw pillows to add some oomph. Here are a few tips that we use to style our couch, including some gorgeous Wylde options that we adore.
KEEP A COHESIVE COLOUR PALETTE: As long as you keep a consistent colour palette (3-5 colours is a good rule of thumb) you will have more success when mixing styles and patterns. We love a bold statement colour, but that colour should serve to accent the space (and the other throw pillows) around it.
VARY SIZES AND SHAPES: For visual interest you want your pillows to vary in shape and size. We love our square pillows in standard 20" mixed with the large 24" square size, as well as lumbar styles.
ADD IN DIFFERENT TEXTURES: If you are going to mix solids and neutrals, textures can bring in interesting details without being too loud. Variety is the spice of life and the secret ingredient to the best pillow styling. It’s these little differences that add up to a beautifully layered home.
BALANCE OUT COLOURS EVENLY: Each side of your sofa should have different colours sprinkled throughout, so try not to have all of one colour on one side. Remember the 60/30/10 rule: 60% should reflect the main dominant colour of your space. 30% are a secondary colour that adds more depth and character the the dominant, and 10% are an accent or feature colour that harmonizes and blends with the rest of the colour story going on.
VARY THE SCALE OF PATTERNS: Patterned throws and pillows are a great way to add life and intrigue to your sofa. When mixing patterns, you want to keep your pillow pairings in the same colour family for a more cohesive look. Placing a solid pillow beneath patterned couch pillows can help serve as a buffer and allow each a little more room to breathe. We’d also recommend pairing large-scale patterns with smaller, more intricate ones.

It's best to choose living room pillows that complement the style and furniture that you already have, whether it’s modern, traditional, boho, or eclectic.
